The Sanderling is a stocky sandpiper that nests in the arctic. In the spring and the late summer/early fall they can be found near my home in Maine. The Sanderling chases and retreats from the waves as they finish their charge towards the sand. They probe the sand with their beaks looking for aquatic insects and other invertebrates. A wave having just retreated left the sand reflective and you can see this foraging Sanderling ignoring its reflection as it searches for a meal.

Chuck Homler caught the photography bug at a young age, intending on going to college for photojournalism. While pursuing a degree he took a detour out of the visual medium and into the world of sound and a 15 year career in radio broadcasting. Radio brought Chuck from New Jersey to Maine where he fell in love with birds and picked-up photography again after a long hiatus.
