Description
We'd arrived for a weeks holiday on Mull and I confess I hadn't really planned on where to go on my first morning there [unusual for me] although I'm a firm believer in following my intuition once in an area and throwing plans out the window if something piques my interest.
For someone undecided, the three beached vessels at Salen were an easy option and an obvious choice being right next to the road. When I got there the stillness of the water was sublime and the magnificent light coming across the Sound of Mull equally so.
I was mindful that the scene in front of me had been photographed many times before - by a lot of talented photographers - and was determined to pull something unique out of it. Trying to distil the scene down to a greater simplicity, I found that accurate positioning of the tripod hid the other two wrecks behind the one in the foreground and gave me a reflection to die for in the sheltered waters of Salen Bay.
Careful use of a circular polariser darkened the reflections on the water to the extent I wanted them, and allowed me to see through the surface of the water to the pebbles below. I went back to breakfast in the Tobermory Hotel very happy with my first mornings work.
