Description
The picturesque outcroppings along the shores of Carmel, Monterey, and Pacific Grove, California are what is left of mountains created by tectonic processes many millions of years ago. During the intervening eons of time Pacific Ocean storm waves have battered the rocky remains into their current eroded state.
This image shows ancient rocks broken apart over time by waves below the sharp curve in the road at Carmel Point. Until they are eventually completely eroded, plant life and birds will continue to use the outcroppings in the area year-round.
Toward the upper right side of the photo, a lone seagull takes a solitary break on the rocks while, nearby, flocks of other sea birds were resting on numerous outcroppings in the early afternoon sun.
Note: A companion piece to this image is "Rocky Remains at Carmel Point," also in this gallery.
