Frere Sauniere, a poor young priest in this tiny French hilltop village was the receiver of a vast fortune in the late 1800's. Referred to in the book & movie "The Di Vinci Code", Rennes-le-Chateau has a long history of bloodshed, treasures and travelers like the Visigoths, Templars, Crusaders, and Cathars. It's said that perhaps these buried their 'booty' in the region, hoping to return & reclaim.
Frere Sauniere despite his very humble beginnings, spent great gobs of money on his "housekeeper", a young local woman, enjoying extensive travel, costly projects & this private little retreat..overlooking the vast environs of the mysterious triangle from Carcassonne to Mt. Bugarach, then here, in Rennes. The housekeeper survived him, living a fabulous lifestyle but taking their secret to her grave.
One thing's for certain..you may never see such a beautiful panoramic sight. It's worth the trip..
