Description
The walls of Richmond Castle in North Yorkshire as they rise above the River Swale. Building began in 1071 by the Norman Alan Rufus as a defence against uprisings in the North which had already incurred King William's wrath and retribution. Further improvements such as the 100ft high keep were puit in place by Duke Conan of Brittany - Rufus' great-nephew in the C12th. By the mid 1500s it had fallen out of use but with the rise of tourism was repaired in the 1800s and is a Grade1 listed building.
