Rickets patients, circa 1900. Full-length front view of deformed legs in five children with rickets, from a family of eight. Rickets is a softening of the bones caused by a deficiency of vitamin D and/or certain minerals. It commonly led to bowed or otherwise deformed legs, clearly seen at far right. This image was originally published in volume 14 (1901) of the French pathology journal 'Nouvelles Iconographie de la Salpetriere' (New Iconography of the Salpetriere), featuring patients photographed at the Salpetriere Hospital, Paris, France.
