One of the worlds largest cathedrals, the Cathedral of Seville was built on the former site of a mosque which was damaged by earthquake in the late 12th century. After the Christians reconquested the territory it was consecrated as a cathedral and rebuilt and finished in 1517 although interior work is always ongoing.
The cathedral is known for being the burial place of Christopher Columbus which is debated and worthy of researching if interested.
The Giralda Bell Tower was one of two areas that avoided earthquake damage in 1356. The name is Spanish for weathervane and was formerly a minaret dating back to 1198.
The main altar, the golden Retablo Mayor, is a magnificent masterpiece designed by a Flemish craftsman, Pierre Dancart, who worked for forty-four years on the various reliefs. It is the largest altarpiece in the world consisting of 36 gilded relief panels depicting life in the Old Testament and lives.
