Description
I almost titled this He sells oranges and onions, but Preacher Roadside Farmer was more appropriate. As we traveled through the backroads of Florida looking for interesting places, we found this fellow who was most delightful and had plenty of stories to share. We even bought a Bible from him. Forget the tourist shops, this is the way to see America.

Vincent Shand, 80, at the time of this image in 2010. *(June 23, 1930 - November 23, 2021)
I have a thousand photos that I shot during vacation to Florida that year, mostly landscapes of the Gulf County/Apalachicola region. Yet, it was on the journey of our trip to Crescent City when we spied this man on a Sunday morning. He was setting up his roadside stand, somewhere along the Interlachen area. Mr. Shand shared his story with us. As my husband listened I shot photos. He talked of how he quit smoking and drinking and became a Seventh Day Adventist who shares the gospel. His church was just across the road. I had also took photos of him with his friend, Brother McKinney.
We bought onions for $1.50, and an old Bible for $5. He didn't want the money for the Bible and insisted my husband take it. We told him to use the money in the offering plate. He liked that idea. I loved getting the Bible to add to my small collection of Bibles. His daughter even found his photo on my old blog and reached out to me years ago.
*Mr. Shand died last year. Reading a note on his obituary revealed that he was a pioneer missionary and his work extended to people in the Bahamas, 1971.
