Description
Some days, when the four walls encroach too close, it’s time to shut down the computer, or put away the books, leave behind the phone – and head out into the world for a hike.
Oftentimes, the word “hike” implies climbing, up out of the valley and far from those four walls, and that is where Rolling Landscape, the artwork, takes us.
We find ourselves in Eastern Washington, what is called Palouse Country, where the hills do, indeed, roll. Many of these fields are planted in wheat, which means that in the springtime, green prevails; and in the summer and fall, gold takes the stage.
It is a soft gold, a gentle gold, a creamy gold that imparts a feeling of calm and quiet. Because the hills are not mountains, one does not have to hike for hours, nor with laborious huffing and puffing, to make it high enough that you are out of the valley and overlooking the vista.
And because it is out in the country, in a place where there are few houses, no shopping malls, and not a parking lot in sight, it is quiet up here. One feels remote and pleasantly alone, as if one won the game King of the Mountain, and all the other children have gone away.
A road wends its way through the landscape, slowly and leisurely making its way through Palouse country. So little traffic goes by that it’s a matter of visual and auditory interest when we spot a car or truck.
“Wonder who that is, and where they’re going?” we muse, idly, but with no intent to find out.
This is a time for letting our mind and body and spirit relax, for immersing ourselves in the silence, for sipping slowly from our water bottle and munching on an apple (some of those trees in the copse, by the way, are old apple trees, from an old homestead that is no more).
This is a time for letting our thoughts roll as gently as the hills.
