This roseate spoonbill was perched high up on a dead branch overlooking the wetlands in southwest Costa Rica. He seems to be smiling at me! The roseate spoonbill is 71–86 cm (28–34 in) long, with a 120–133 cm (47–52 in) wingspan and a body mass of 1.2–1.8 kg (2.6–4.0 lb). The roseate spoonbill can be found in marshes and water habitats. They are easy to recognize for their distinctive pink coloring. They are often found looking for food, stirring their bills in the mud and shallow water. They eat whatever comes in touch with their bill, mostly fish, crustaceans, frogs and snails.
