If you are looking for a fairy tale old German village, Rothenburg ob der Tauber might be the place to go. Colorful half-timber houses, cobblestone alleys, Medieval walls are all here. As early as 1142 AD, sections of the fortified stone wall had been erected to protect the castle.
Named a Free Imperial City in 1274, the wall was fortified, the watchtowers were strengthened and expanded to over two miles. By 1400, Rothenburg was the 2nd largest city in Germany.
While the castle is gone, but the wall, its covered ramparts walkways, and many of its towers are still here.
