Artist's Description
The ancient Round Tower at Glendalough rises majestically against the background of the forest which seems to contain at least forty shades of green.
Glendalough, [Gleann Da Loch, meaning "The Valley of the two lakes"] is a glacial valley in County Wicklow, Ireland, renowned for an Early Medieval monastic settlement founded in the 6th century by St Kevin.
Irish round towers are early medieval stone towers built between the 9th and 12th centuries, although this one at Glendalough is much older. Generally found in the vicinity of a church or monastery, the door of the tower is invariably elevated above ground level thus requiring a ladder to enter.
The most general view as to their purpose was that the towers were built as a refuge against raiders such as Vikings. If a lookout posted in the tower spotted a Viking force, the members of the monastic settlement would enter, using a ladder which could be raised from within.
