This was taken from the first floor, about halfway to the stage. This gives you a good idea of how the seating is for those not climbing the stairs to the balcony. Curves figure prominently in this unique auditorium's design.

The Ryman was built as a tabernacle, thus the wonderfully curved, wooden pews and its 'Mother Church of Country Music' nickname.

The auditorium first opened as the Union Gospel Tabernacle in 1892. It was built by Thomas Ryman, (1843 -1904), a riverboat captain and Nashville businessman who owned several saloons. He conceived of the auditorium as a tabernacle for the influential revivalist Samuel Porter Jones. After Mr. Ryman's death, the tabernacle was renamed Ryman Auditorium in his honor. I attended the University of Rhode Island where I studied photography under Bart Parker. I graduated with a BFA in fine art photography and a minor in communications. College was always b&w work, hand-processed in the dark room, using many different cameras. It was great fun. After college I worked in the photo-finishing business for many years as well as doing commercial photography. In the 80's I started to shoot only color for my artwork and never returned to the world of black & white - until 2014.
