Description
Chalma has been known as a sacred and holy place since prehispanic times. It is here that a large single piece of obsidian crystal, in a cave beside the church's present location was revered by the Aztecas as a place where energy of the earth converged. The Spanish, observing it as a pagan type of worship, had the obsidian carved into a crucifix to create a so called miracle, or miraculously the large crystal turned into a crucifix. To this day it is know as a place of worship for the Aztecas descendants, and for those who have integrated the Azteca and Catholic beliefs and also the traditional Catholics. Next to the miracle at Guadalupe, Chalma is the second most sacred place in all of Mexico. Thousands make the pilgrimage from afar during holy week and Christmas.
