ᐊᐢᐱᐢᑫᐧᓯᒧᐣ ~ aspiskwêsimon. 2021. 24”x30”. mixed media on canvas with tobacco, sage, sweetgrass, cedar, sweet pine, lavender, copal, bear root, and rose petals. This piece is the 3rd of 4 in my ᓂᐦᑖᐃᐧᑭᐃᐧᐣ nihtâwikiwin birth medicine series. . Birth is a significant shift in the relationship between baby & mama. This transition can be experienced in an unimaginably wide range of ways, sometimes incredibly seamless & beautiful, sometimes so difficult with varying degrees of [what is labelled] post-partum depression. One person may experience the entire spectrum multiple times over in the course of a single day. Families spending time in the NICU may face additional challenges, as do those undergoing adoption or surrogacy. Each experience is unique & meant to be honoured. The support of the land & cosmos are always available to parent(s) & baby. . This piece honours these ranges of experiences, reminding us that even after this significant transition of bringing our little one earthside, we remain forever connected through the tree of life & those constellations that brought them into the world. It features a print of a placenta, the tree of life, alongside a number of both painted & real plant medicines. It is a reminder of all of the medicines that grow from this primary source of life, as well as both mother & baby’s ongoing connections with the constellations that bring baby into the world. This piece features tobacco offerings & a number of healing plant medicines that honour & bring wellness to both mother & baby through the sacred tree they continue to share following birth. This piece intentionally brings post-partum medicine, reminding mother & baby that they remain forever connected to one another, to the cosmos, & to all of creation through this sacred tree.
