Artist's Description

Saint Margaret of Scotland. South nave window (detail). Glenmuick (Ballater) Parish Church. Ballater, Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, United Kingdom, Europe. Church designed by J.Russell Mackenzie of Aberdeen in 1873. This window was given in 1986 by Sir George Middleton in memory of his wife, who died in 1964. Sir George was Medical Practitioner in Ballater and Surgeon Apothecary to the Royal Household for over 40 years. The window was unveiled by HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. The left hand pane represents St Margaret of Antioch, patron saint of women in childbirth. She was swallowed by a dragon, but was so good and kind that the dragon was sick, so she is represented conquering the dragon with the Christian cross. Wearing a crown, she is a composite figure representing also St Margaret, Queen of Scotland. She is surrounded by flowers. The window was designed and made by Sax and Christian Shaw of Edinburgh.

About Stan Pritchard

I'm in my 85th. year. I began in photography sixty years ago using a folding Kodak 620 Brownie, which I still have but no longer use. I have always loved photography as an absorbing pastime and I think myself fortunate that I have never had to try to earn a living from it. I am an active member of Alamy and Photographers Direct.
