Salyut 1 space station. Artwork of the Soyuz 11 spacecraft (upper left) docking with the Salyut 1 space station (right) in Earth orbit on 7 June 1971. Salyut 1, built by the Soviet Union, was the world's first space station and was launched on 19 April 1971. The USSR and the Kamchatka Peninsula are seen in the background. The Moon is at upper left. The Soyuz crew spent 23 days on the space station, but died during re-entry due to a leak that led to depressurisation of their spacecraft. Salyut 1 was deorbited on 11 October 1971, breaking up in the Earth's atmosphere.
