Description
The trail through Samaria Gorge on the island of Crete is one of the most beautiful hikes in the world. It's a national park, a biosphere reserve, and a protected UNESCO site.
The 13-km trail is all downhill from the upper reaches of the White Mountains to the exit from the national park, then another three km to the Mediterranean Sea. The elevation change is over 1200 meters (4,000 feet) through rocky, hot terrain.
The upper reaches of the trail are absolutely stunning, with steep switchbacks and drop-offs and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. The lower reaches follow alongside or right in the dry riverbed at the base of the gorge.
