Description
Along the great savanna of Tanzania, Africa is a vast, but narrow stretch of oasis called the Serengeti. In the 1930's and 1940's, following its disappearance for almost 50 years, the mighty Serengeti elephant began to migrate again into this great oasis. Many believe that the elephant left to escape greedy poachers who sought only to plunder this gentle mammal but for its ivory tusks. Even after migrating back into the Serengeti, the elephant was again hunted to near extinction in the mid 1970's and 1980's. Today, the elephant flourishes on the Serengeti thanks to the wisdom of the Tanzanian government which had established the Serengeti National Park and warrants against any who sought to plunder this and other protected species. The Serengeti elephant is the largest land mammal on earth, weighing between 3,000 and 5,000 kilograms. "Sands of the Serengeti" is my tribute to this magnificent creature. My goal with this work was to convey the power and strength of the Serengeti elephant in a herd, lumbering desperately to shelter from an oncoming dust storm. This work was created using Maya, Bryce and DAZ Studio. It is not a photograph nor were any photographs used in creating it.
