Setting the Wikipedia history below aside for a moment. I remember walking the Via della Conciliazione past this bell tower in 2004 as we walked to St. Peter's from our hotel. I found it striking then, and every time I've seen it since.
Santa Maria in Traspontina (or Transpontina) is a Carmelite church in Rome, Italy. The shrine lies on the Via della Conciliazione, the main road of the Rione Borgo.
The church was established as a cardinalitial titulus by Pope Sixtus V on 13 April 1587. The current Cardinal of Santa Maria in Traspontina is the former Archbishop of Quebec, Marc Ouellet, a supporter of Opus Dei, who is now the Prefect of the Sacred Congregation of Bishops in the Roman Curia. (He was Cardinal Priest from 2003 to 2018, and continued there when co-opted to suburbicarian rank.) (Wikipedia, 2019)
