More on Western Red Cedar: Thuja plicata, commonly called western or Pacific Red Cedar, giant or Western Arborvitae, Giant Cedar, or Shinglewood, is a species of Thuja, an evergreen coniferous tree in the cypress family Cupressaceae native to western North America. Despite its common names, it does not belong with the true cedars within the genus Cedrus. Western Red Cedar is among the most widespread trees in the Pacific Northwest. In fact, it is the provincial tree of British Columbia, it has extensive applications for the indigenous First Nations of the Pacific Northwest.
