Description
This was to be the first oil painting in a series, The Spirit Animals of Belize. The Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao) is one of the most magnificent parrots on earth, and is native to Belize and throughout Central America. Besides having striking red, yellow, and blue feathers, it is highly social and extremely intelligent. The Mayans portrayed the scarlet macaw in much of their ritual art and on their temples. As an animal spirit or totem, the macaw is a symbol of creativity, intelligence, and inspiration. Their beautiful feathers have been used in healing rituals that call on the power of color and light. They teach us to be creative, expressive, and discerning for true happiness in life.

This is my first oil painting on Fine Art America. I have lived in Belize for the past year and love it here. Scarlet Macaws are native to Belize, and they can be seen every year in large groups in the Stann Creek District. I wanted to capture the grand beauty of this magnificent bird in my painting. My original career wish was to be a scientific illustrator, so you can see that trend in all my work... to capture the accuracy (and thus the true beauty) of my subject.
