An open seed capsule of the giant Himalayan lily, Cardiocrinum giganteum. As it dries, the capsule splits into three segments, each with two locules containing seeds. To the right, a stack of seeds is visible within a locule, held in place by hygroscopic teeth (to lower right). To picture left are seeds that have escaped from the stack. The seeds consist of a rounded triangular central region comprising the endosperm and embryo, surrounded by a membraneous wing. Each is 12-15mm across and weighs approximately 5mg.The capsules develop on a stem up to 2.5m tall. Each holds many hundreds of seeds; their light weight and flattened shape ensures efficient wind dispersal. C. giganteum is a hardy perennial garden plant which bears large lily-like flowers in midsummer. It is monocarpic; the plant dies after flowering, leaving offset bulbs in the ground to flower in subsequent years.
