Congratulations on being selected for "The Artist's Magazine" online monthly honors! I received our Saratoga Arts newsletter today and when I saw the news I knew that out of 1.9 million pieces of art (or whatever) on FAA I had maintained an image in my mind and also knew I had commented on it. You are making memorable art, Paul.

Paul Chapman replied:

Betty, Thanks for your kind comments, I truly appreciate them. The information in the newsletter was slightly misleading - I don't know what happened. The painting I got to be artist of the month for was a finalist in the portrait division of the annual competition. That painting is the one of me brushing my teeth. This painting ("Shingles") was featured in the monthly magazine The Rotarian - the article was about the disease. The author asked if she could use my painting to support her piece - of course I said yes.

yeah - shingles are no fun. My problem was that I got the vaccine first - then I thought the case would be milder, if I had to have it and then I started going to the eye doctor because it went inside the eye and scarred the cornea and so on. It started in March and I am still feeling it - mild but it is still there. thanks for your comment

Ouch! (waist/back) They are a unique kind of torture, not easily explained... I was interested in your comment because I did a painting called "My Fragile Knee" in a similar attempt to divert my mind. (Didn't help.)

I wanted something quirky for the bathroom, and this acrylic portrait was exactly right. Very nice work on the frame and matting, too.

I love this print. I was drawn to it immediately. Right now it graces the top of my filing cabinet as there is no place to display it properly. Absolutely gorgeous.

Mountings were attached upside down. Disappointed in final product due to its cost and rushed work.

Artist's Description

I have had shingles for 8 weeks now and in that time I tried to take the sting out by painting a picture showing what it feels like with this painful condition.

About Paul Chapman

I retired from teaching art for 35-1/2 years and realized that I could do anything I wanted for the rest of my life. I decided to paint. I also knew that I was not as good a painter as I was a teacher so I thought this might be a difficult task. I liked the idea of facing a challenge like that. The thing that pushed me harder, to create a larger body of work, was my cousin - Bill McCarthy - he was going to have a show in a store in a local city and he is a potter - he needed someone to show some two-dimensional works. He asked me and I was ready to go. I think I wound up having 50 or more pieces for that show and I have never looked back. I think that show was in 2003, it could have been a little earlier. I kept painting and my...
