The scientific name is Sequoiadendron giganteum. Commonly known as giant sequoia; or giant redwood, Sierra redwood, Sierran redwood is the sole living species in the genus Sequoiadendron, and one of three species of coniferous trees known as redwoods.
The giant sequoia is listed as an endangered species with fewer than 80,000 trees remaining.
Sequoia National Park is in the southern Sierra Nevada east of Visalia, California. It was established on September 25, 1890, to protect 404,064 acres of forested mountainous terrain. The park is notable for its giant sequoia trees, including the General Sherman tree, the largest tree on Earth by volume. The General Sherman tree grows in the Giant Forest, which contains five of the ten largest trees in the world.
