Seven-forty (7:40) is a Jewish melody and song of unknown origin. One common story claims that the song originated in the late 19th Century and refers to the train that brought shtetl-dwelling Jewish merchants to and from Odessa every day, arriving at 7:40 a.m. and leaving at 7:40 p.m.
The song has the following words: a train will come, it will definitely come, and it will come exactly at seven-forty. Then, it continues, that it may be late or it may even never come, but we are still going to wait for that train.
In this painting, I decided to dig deeper into the song by portraying that if one train does not show up, another one will always be there at a different time; if no trains are ever available, then we still need to find a way to move forward in life and keep living.
The train is supposed to be a symbol for the progression of life. It is never okay to stop living one’s life to the fullest. One must always move forward despite the challenges and hardships they face...
