Description
Sharjah is one of the seven emirates which make up the UAE. Today, as for the last 200 years it is governed by the Al Qasimi family which has deep roots in the Arabian peninsula and dominated shipping lanes in the 18th and 19th century. With a landmass that links the Arabian Gulf with the coast of the Gulf of Oman and the Indian Ocean, Sharjahs history and economy was shaped by extensive maritime trade.
Its residential architecture used to be introvert, low-rise, with courtyards and narrow shady lanes in tightly packed neighborhoods. Near the port, we still find traditional souqs and recently restored houses built of coral stone. Today, Sharjah has established itself as a center of art, culture and education.
