Description
“Do you want to go on a picnic?”
The very question brings a smile of anticipation, with visions of a wicker picnic basket filled with grand, wonderful things to eat; a bottle of wine; and a cloth to spread upon the ground while the picnickers repose, gently conversing and looking about them at the tranquil landscape.
Shore Leave, the artwork, invites the viewer on just such a picnic, and more, as two small craft are moored to the rocky banks of a small island in a serene river. Nobody is in sight, but the boats themselves tell us that somebody is here, and because here is such a quiet, tranquil spot, we know that this is the perfect place to bring that picnic.
Set in the Columbia River Gorge between the states of Washington and Oregon in the USA’s Pacific Northwest, Shore Leave is nestled in a remote, out of the way spot between two major highways fronting the river. It is a reminder that the quiet places, the quiet times, the quiet opportunities do exist, but they are not easily found: one has to want them, to look for them, to be determined to find them – and in doing so, one generally does.
Oddly, these quiet places are often found in the midst of noisy ones, when one is willing to step off the path that everyone else is on and take a narrower one, a less easily traveled one, a less popular one – and isn’t that what life is always asking us to do?
Don’t we find – when we set off on a path that few are on but we are determined to follow – that we learn and change so much in the process? And while we sometimes look about and say, “There’s no one here! Am I really in the right place?” if we are willing to let go of the crowd mentality, this insecurity that drives us to fit into what everyone else is doing, then we explore where we are, lay out the colorful cloth from our picnic basket, and settle down for a most delightful, memorable lunch.
