I had held off purchasing any Super Bowl LVIII collectibles or memorabilia until I found something that I thought was just “awesome”. When I saw this SI Cover, I knew I had to have it. Honestly it’s one of the best photos I’ve ever seen. Along with the captions it captures what Super Bowl LVIII was all about. Your Photog was in the right place at the right time and did a great job of capturing what Chiefs fans all across the country felt at that moment. As you can see I had the perfect place for it, it makes this wall complete and up to date.

Shane Great Shot, just found it and don't know if you ever got a positive ID? To me it looks like a South American Yellow-breasted Flycatcher (Tolmomyias fliaviventris). L/F!!
Shane Bechler replied:
Thanks Don. I appreciate your identification input.

This bird is most definitely NOT a Hawaiian endemic. I do not know which species it is, but I would guess that it is an oriole (Icterus) with a bill deformity. Neither the amakihis nor anianiau ever have this kind of orange-yellow color. No adult male, which this would have to be, amakihi has white wing bars (adult female Oahu Amakihi have wing bars, but they are not bright yellow). Neither amakihis nor anianiau have any seasonal movements; they are as sedentary as birds get. So their potential for vagrancy is essentially zero. This bird has none of the jizz of a Hawaiian honeycreeper (looks too big and lanky, too long-tailed), which are proportioned more like goldfinches than icterids. The bill really is a good imitation of a Kauai Amakihi bill, so I can understand why you were misled. Sorry I took so long to respond on this, but I lost contact with my emails for several weeks and was unaware of it. -Doug Pratt

Thank you very much Doug. I appreciate your input and analysis of this bird.

wonderful bird well taken. i'm currently doing illustrations of hawaiian birds and was amazed to read you saw this bird in mexico. i wonder if mexico has anything like a rare bird alert? an expert like douglas pratt could tell you exactly what bird this is, but my limited knowledge suggests that the bird is an amakihi (i can see he has a yellow undertail covert and apparently a white wing bar)-- though oddly the lores aren't really dark enough. anianiau has pinkish bill and feet. the real question is what is an endangered hawaiian honeycreeper doing in mexico??? if this bird is actually successfully breeding in mexico that could be of some interest to ornithologists. congrats on a great pic!
Shane Bechler replied:
Thanks R Christopher. I will have to see if I can find out how to contact Douglas Pratt. I have not found anyone yet that can confirm which breed of bird this is for me. Thanks for the information.
