The menacing beauty of a bank of silvery teddy bear cholla under an overcast sky. The thickly spined branches of this cactus are a favored, heavily fortified nesting place for cactus wrens. This cholla is native to north-west Mexico, California, Arizona and Nevada. The heavy spines protect the plants against dehydration from the desert sun. Showing above the cholla in this picture are the spindly branches of creosote bushes. These silvery cacti were photographed in the city of Tucson, Arizona.
