The Harris's Hawk [Parabuteo unicinctus] or Harris Hawk formerly known as the Bay-winged Hawk or Dusky Hawk, is a medium-large bird of prey with a body length of approximately 18-22 inches and a wingspan of 3.5 to 4 feet. They can be found in semi-arid regions of Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas with their range extending into Mexico, Central and South America. Harris's hawks are sometimes referred to as "Wolves of the Sky" or "Wolves with feathers" because unlike most raptors, they are extremely social birds that live and hunt in social groups. Often 3 to 5 family members will hunt together, taking turns chasing their prey and wearing it down, then when the prey is totally exhausted it is captured and killed. The entire family shares in the kill, with the adults waiting to eat until the juveniles have had their fill. This unique behavior has made them popular in the sport of falconry.
