Description
Light micrograph of blood infected with the parasitic protozoan, Trypanosoma rhodesiense, one of the agents of African sleeping sickness. The trypanosomes appear here as elongated, ribbon-like objects, stained purple; numerous red blood cells appear grey. T. rhodesiense is transmitted by bites from the tsetse fly Glossina morsitans: the other species causing sleeping sickness, T. gambiense, is transmitted by G. palpalis. After completion of their insect life-cycle stages, trypanosomes appear & multiply in the bloodstream. The characteristic lethargy caused by meningo- encephalitis appears after about a month. Magnification: X 250 at 35mm size.
