At the turn of the century, the main mode of winter transportation was by horse drawn sleigh or \'cutter\' as depicted here. The scene is typical of many communities in eastern Canada and the north eastern United States. This couple are out for a fast paced sleigh ride on a mid-winter day. Their beautifully matched pair of bay horses are feeling fine and seem to be enjoying the gallop.
The Thousand Islands region of Ontario, Canada, was the perfect backdrop for a childhood filled with adventure for Richard De Wolfe, an artist who still identifies strongly with rural life.
