Description
Sole of the foot. Light micrograph of a section through skin from the sole of the foot. The outer most layer of skin is the stratum corneum (red), it consists of dead cells that act as a protective barrier. It is particularly thick on the soles of the feet. Beneath this are the stratum lucidum (bright red), the stratum granulosm (thin purple line), the stratum spinosum (dark pink) and the stratum basale (purple). Next is the dermis (brown), a thick layer of connective tissue. Beneath that is the hypodermis, which contains adipose (fat) cells (white circles). Magnification: x13 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
