Description
SOLOMONS LUMP LIGHTHOUSE
Kedges Straight, North West of Crisfield, MD
Chesapeake Bay
Only the tower and caisson of this lighthouse, built in 1895, remain. The light marks the south side of Kedges Straight between the Chesapeake Bay and Tangier Sound. It flashes white on a six second interval with two red sectors. The tower is 47 feet above high water and can be seen for six to eight miles.
Early Lighthouse construction in Bay were persistently of the screwpile design. Eight iron rods were “Screwed” into the bottom with auger type feet. The keeper’s house and lantern rooms were then constructed on the platform formed and supported by the screws. Unfortunately, ice proved to be too much for all but one, Thomas Point, and the design fell into disfavor. The first light at Kedges Straight was of this design and replaced in 1895 with the current caisson. Visitors must arrange for a boat, probably from Crisfield MD.
