The tall case ('grandfather') clock was made and signed by Aaron Miller of Elizabethtown, New Jersey, circa 1747. The case is cherry wood. Once owned by a ship captain Smith of Mystic, Connecticut, today these clocks are highly prized and worth many many thousands of dollars.

The first definite record of a New Jersey clockmaker is the following advertisement which appeared in the New York Gazetteer of November 23, 1747:
Aaron Miller, clockmaker in Elizabethtown, East Jersey, makes and sells all sorts of clocks after the Dutch manner, with expedition.
