I have the most beautiful Ironwood tree growing on my property and many photographs of it and others in the surrounding Sonoran Desert of Arizona. This photo was taken on November 5, 2017 in the early morning. The intense variety of shades emanating from the sunlit clouds behind it made for an extraordinary silhouette. I live in a remote area about 50 miles south of Phoenix where the sunsets are usually more spectacular than the sunrises. This morning was an exception, so I decided to digitally enhance the effects to soften the brilliance of the sun. While it may look like this is more than one tree, it is not. Desert Ironwood tree is known for its hard wood and having many trunks with an extensive root system. Desert Ironwood is an important keystone species in this most diverse of all the American deserts, and is protected by law.
