Description
Sphinx scaffolding. Early 20th-century excavation at the Giza Necropolis, Egypt, with scaffolding on the Great Sphinx (26th century BC) to aid the removal of desert sands. This statue of a mythical creature has the face of a man and the body of a lion. In the background at left is Menkaure's Pyramid, with Khafre's Pyramid partly seen behind the Sphinx. An earlier Sphinx excavation was marked by the Dream Stele (1401 BC) of Thutmose IV, at lower centre. The granite altar (bottom) between the Sphinx's paws dates from the time of Rameses II (13th century BC). This photograph, dating to between 1915 and 1930, is from the Keystone View Company.
