Congratulations! Carolyn, this piece was selected to be the cover art for the Silk Paintings Group for 2014. Beautiful work, which represents Silk painting and it's diversity so very well. It was chosen from all the images submitted to the group through out the entire year 2013. Keep up the beautiful work!

I love the piece so much! How well it works in my whimsical blue garden! I just did not know to depict the rabbit hole in the Alice in Wonderland area that this is the perfect conceptual representation. It is beautiful and whimsical. As I had to place it on a stump where a branch had been sawed, I hired a one skilled with a jigsaw to round the edges a bit for visual believability and, after attaching it to the stump, added tiny pieces of bark around the edge to help it blend with the stump. Great discovery!

Somebody shares an image of this with me on august 2nd. I did some research and found this one for sale and bought the version printed on Wood!! I love it! In fact my Abyssinian Fabia loves it too!! She gets up on my dresser and paws the face of this beauty gently!! No claws out thank gosh!! I though it was neat that she found beauty in it as I did! Thanks for having such a fabulous imagination!!

Artist's Description

2011. This was inspired from time spent far north on a lonely ridgetop. No trees. Life low to the ground. Nothing to slow the wind. Batik is the process of using wax and dyes to create designs on fabric. Wax is heated in a tool called a tjanting and then passes thru a copper or metal tube on to the fabric. Where the wax is placed, the dye cannot penetrate. I work in layers to create a design. Wax some, Dye some. When the dye touches the fabric, it spreads like water. So the wax creates a border that controls where the dye can go. Silk is such an ethereal medium to work on. The way the dyes move around and blend in the boundaries created by the wax. Salt creates a unique effect as well. When the piece is finished, the wax is removed. I then stretch the silk on foamcore using linen tape. I use only high quality silk fabric and pure beeswax in my work. Batik is the process of using wax and dyes to create designs on fabric. About Carolyn Doe

Welcome to my art. Please check out my new website: www.carolyndoe.com I am self taught which only means I just played until I figured something out. My ongoing education in art takes place thru my own passion and pleasure in the exploration of creative processes. Always excited by fiberarts and having been raised by a seamstress, I started working in batik on silk fabric over twenty five years ago. Batik has become my voice. When dye touches silk fabric it spreads like crazy. The wax creates a boundary. It is this dance of control/no control that captivates me for hours. Through this ethereal quality, I try to convey the essence of a place and of the creatures who dwell there. About 2 years ago I took a class on palette knife...
