Spitfire – Long Odds
September 1940 and a pair of Spits pull hard onto the Bf 109 group supporting the He 111 bomber formation below. The major tactical change forced on the Luftwaffe fighters – to stick with the bomber formation at all costs – allowed much greater tactical freedom to the Spitfire squadrons and turned out to be a game changer. At the limit of their endurance the Bf109s were unable to effectively counter the Spit and Hurricane forces – and so the battle swung towards the RAF forces. However, two Spits against major Lufwaffe formations was still very long odds.
