Description
St Johns Episcopal Church Ruins
These are the remains of fieldstone ruins of the 1852 St Johns Episcopal Church in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. During the Civil War this church was used as a hospital as well as a barracks. The severely weathered ruins are all that is left of the St Johns Episcopal Church that was constructed between 1851 and 1852 and is one of the five earliest churches founded in Harpers Ferry. While serving as a hospital and barracks during the Civil War the church underwent considerable damage, it was reconstructed after the war but was abandoned in 1895 when a new Episcopal church was erected in the upper town. At one time the historic field stones used in the construction of the church were completely faced in mortar and the National Park Service is stabilizing these historic walls through preservation efforts. Fencing and managed trails around the site are maintained to discourage visitors from climbing on the very fragile ruins.
