Lest everyone think my life is all joy and beauty, I reworked this sketch from my journal. It expresses my feelings after a terrible horse wreck back in 1994. All that autumn, I'd felt as if trouble struck everyone I came in contact with in my Artist-in-Schools travels. My hostess in DeSmet came bursting into my room in tears one morning because her grandson had wrecked his truckload of sunflowers and was badly hurt. A teacher I was working with had to leave because her father fell ill and died. The farm family I stayed with had so much trouble with their combine catching fire, they had to drive pickups with water tanks out to their fields, and disk to contain the flames. A neighbor made a wrong step off a combine and lost a leg. I kept imagining this long-legged rangy wildcat as big as the sky, stalking round and round me, pouncing on my friends and getting closer all the time. And then one day she struck! I'd returned home to Wyoming and took my horse out for a gallop, when for no apparent reason everything went wrong. I got pitched, and woke up with a headache that has never left me since.
