Freight trains were integral to the growth of Pittsburgh and the steel industry since the beginning of the American Industrial Revolution. They are still very much a part of the fabric of western Pennsylvania as they wind through the hills and valleys. The Pennsylvania Railroad was an American Class I Railroad founded in 1846. The railroad was commonly referred to as "Pennsy" and headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The PRR was the largest railroad in the U.S. for the first half of the 20th century and at one time was the largest publicly traded corporation in the world.
