Description
Steel production: a worker checking the contents of an electric arc steel-making furnace. Inside the furnace are three graphite electrodes. An arc is struck between them using a three-phase current. This produces temperatures of up to 3,400 Celsius. The worker is checking to ensure that the crust of impurities floating on the molten steel does not form a solid 'cap'. As the furnace uses a massive current, the lance being used by the worker to break up the crust has a substantial earthing cable fitted.
