The unusually flat limestone shelf that creates the Falls of the Steinhatchee River is a unique Karst formation that makes this river special. It has been documented that Spanish explorer Desoto crossed the river at the Falls in 1539. 1818 General Andrew Jackson crossed the falls to dispatch the Seminole Indians during a heavy conflict period with native Americans. Then in 1838, General Zachary Taylor led troops across the falls to lead a raid against the Seminole Indians during a period that was considered to be the Second Seminole War. Now it is celebrated as a place of beauty and a place for recreation with a modest Riverside park tucked back in the wilds of the Steinhatchee WMA. Photo was taken with a Sigma 18-250 mm with EOS 7D
