Description
Water sterilization. Fish farm water being sterilized by irradiating it with UltraViolet (UV) light. The water is pouring from a chamber containing a UV lamp (not shown). Fish farms contain a high concentration of fish in ponds or pens. Such conditions are ideal for parasitic or infectious microorganisms. UV light is toxic and so a strong source will destroy water-borne microorganisms. UV light has a wavelength of about 300 nanometres (nm) and so is invisible to the human eye. It is present in sunlight or can be made artificially, and causes sunburn.
