Georgia, thank you so much for the compliments on my work !

Ben, Wonderful painting...great brush strokes, excellent colors between the brown, greens and golden onions, the amber wall behind them and the hard sculpted blues, greens, purples and black of stone shelf. Very fine composition. Stunning work. You are a true artist. cheers, georgia

Wonderful painting, Ben ! voted

Thank You ! I feel honoured !

Brilliant work! f/l

outdoor painting is joyful and challenging.

I see that in your painting. I understand your subjects and the simplicity in painting. When you see the way in the begining of outdoor with brushes... we can see the draft works of the painting day outdoor. Right?!

Ben Rikken replied:

If Y do understand your question wel : The outdoor drafts sometimes end up like finishad paintings . Set up as rendering of the atmosphere of the very moment, I choose tonality first( little or much contrast ) and then the palette : harmonic scales as used by Johannes Itten ( see clourscemes ) Does this make sense to You ?

good to comtemplate it and to learn how to do this!

Ben Rikken replied:

Hi Kim, thank You for the compliments ! I am trained as a painter in the Dutch traditional way of seeing ,and I learned to observe and render ordinary things in a classical manner ; among others things like bread, onions, fruits, classical plein-air landscape

I’m very pleased with my Back2bike bag from artist John Kurtyka. The bag is high quality so it holds my library books quite securely. And since I’m a bike rider, I love the picture, so unique, people notice it and comment so I tell them about this website and the unique works of this artist.

Gorgeous photo on the bag. Loved that I could adjust the photo size to suit my preference. Wanted to use for going to the health food store as I need to replace the 15 year old canvas, washable bags I have now. These will not last as long as those canvas bags. I could even deal with slight fading when I needed to wash them. These do not feel washable. Cheap mesh "fabric" on the interior will tear. Disappointed in the fabric on the inside and outside.

I was hoping for a heavyweight cotton canvas bag to use for grocery shopping; this will not be it. I wanted a bag that would be washable. This has a cheap mesh fabric on the interior that will tear in short order. The exterior is some sort of nylon or other synthetic fabric that I do not feel comfortable washing. I guess I didn't realize what kind of fabric it was made of. It is beautiful but not useful for my needs.

I wanted some pretty tote canvas tote bags to replace the durable canvas bags I use for trips to the health food store. While certainly beautiful, this bag will not be useful for that purpose. The interior is made of that lightweight, cheap mesh fabric that tears with the slightest bit of stress on it. I was hoping for heavy canvas, but this is an odd fabric that will not hold up for what I wanted to use it for.

About Ben Rikken

Ben Rikken (1951) After graduating from Minerva Academy in Groningen, Rikken made several study trips through Europe. During these trips he learned how to portray the various European landscapes on canvas. Rikken paints according to 19th-century principles. Entirely in the tradition of the first Impressionists, he works outdoors as much as possible. He creates small preliminary studies en plein air and works them out into the final painting in his studio. This method of working enables Rikken to capture the light, atmosphere and scenery in its purest form. The unusual perspective and the often intense colours demonstrate that Rikken is a child of his times, despite his admiration for the Old Masters. Light and colour are perhaps...
