Description
Stonehenge, 17th century artwork. This megalithic stone circle was constructed over 5000 years ago as a Druid temple, burial ground, or astronomical observatory. The alignment of the stones is believed to have been used to make astronomical predictions. This is a view of what it was thought an intact Stonehenge would have looked like. This artwork was part of a survey and restoration of the site carried out by the British architect Inigo Jones (1573-1652), and published in The most notable antiquity of Great Britain, vulgarly called Stone-Heng. This artwork is from the 1725 edition.
