20 x 26 inches 50 x 65 cm
I painted these aircraft exhaust fumes over Monte Cardeto just outside my house, but they were soon covered by storm clouds which eventually built up over the afternoon, and had millions of Italian dogs barking, as if the thunderous heavens posed a bigger threat to them, than their own prime minister. The gnarled foreground in this work epitomized my spirit which had to be spoken soft encouraging words throughout. Resolving the canvas in such an abandoned way though, was ultimate reward. I was taken on a flight of fancy to the days of John Constable, when landscape painting was still a luxury.
The recent bad weather around Rome, has certainly come at a good time for me, as there is nothing worse than a clear blue sky for an Impressionist. Eugene Boudin, 1824 - 1898, the father of Impressionism, who proved such a vital figure in the life of young Claude Monet, looked down from the clouds at my feeble attempt, but at least, his smile could not...
