This is from a series of work done between 2008 and 2011. Hand gesture was combined with scribbled lines to symbolize a state of mind. This piece imagines each moment being like a spot on an endless string, examined or noticed and then let go. On the original piece,wax based encaustic paint is layered with pen and ink drawn on mulberry paper.
About Andrea Benson
For the last decade I have been working in mixed media painting from my studio in Portland, Oregon. I typically work with a beeswax and resin based based paint called encaustic. Encaustic is a wonderful vehicle for mixed media artworks, and I frequently integrate drawing and different kinds of natural fiber papers into my pieces. I make most of the paint I use myself. My art imagery moves back and forth between figurative and landscape. When using the figure, I'm often thinking about how a gesture or pose reflects a certain state of mind or view of the world. What kind of metaphor does it imply? I love patterns, textures and doodley scribbles creating a fabric around a figure. I like the activity of composition and moving things around,...
